Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s comics not only made Superman the most famous superhero of all time, they actually founded a whole new comic genre. They created the Man of Steel in the 1930s and first self-published the stories before signing with DC. Since they were both big science fiction fans, they developed the hero of their story as an alien sent to Earth as a baby from another star. It is significant that after almost 85 years, Superman comics are still being published and read, there are countless film adaptations and everyone recognises the blue-red-yellow-clad saviour of mankind.

The DC Comics Superman Crystal Clear Pictures are very special pieces of art for fans of Clark Kent. Selected images from the comics have been printed on wood and covered with synthetic resin to create a special effect that makes the colours glow and the images appear crystal clear.

  • Super Strength: This drawing graced the cover of the 2015 issue of Superman: The Man of Tomorrow, where artists Klaus Jansen and John Romita, Jr. used limited colour to create a striking image of Superman lifting parts of buildings with his super-human strength.

  • Laser Eyes: In the comic “Superman: Rebirth #1”, Clark Kent has to prove himself as a father and raise his son together with Lois Lane. In the process, his laser vision helps him protect his child from all kinds of enemies and dangers. In the picture drawn by Doug Mahnke, you can feel the heat of Superman’s glowing eyes.

  • The Death of Superman: When comic book sales hit rock bottom in the 1990s, the publishers decided to kill Superman. In this picture, which also graced the cover of the issue, Superman’s bright red cape is blowing raggedly in the wind. It’s like a symbol that even believed dead, he never really disappears.

  • The Last Son of Krypton: The retro-style image in black and white is inspired by Elliot S. Maggin’s 1978 novel of the same name, about Earth being threatened by an alien ruler. The writing on the picture hints at Clark Kent’s actual origins: “The last hope for humanity rests in the hands of an alien.”

  • Brighten up your home with impressive art based on comic book history. Luckily, you don’t need super-human strength or laser vision to hang them: screws, nails or even double-sided tape will do.
